Can a 10-month-old baby go floating?
In general, it’s not recommended to submerge or expose a 10-month-old baby to water without proper supervision and precautions. At this age, babies are still developing their swimming skills and have limited buoyancy control.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing water play to infants as early as six months old, but with close adult supervision and in shallow water (≤12 inches). As they get older, around 12-18 months, you can start gradually increasing the depth and duration of immersion under adult guidance.
Before taking your 10-month-old baby floating or swimming:
- Ensure they’re comfortable wearing a properly fitted life jacket.
- Choose calm, safe waters with no strong currents or undertows.
- Start in shallow water (less than knee-deep) and gradually increase the depth as they get more confident.
- Always supervise your child closely, especially when introducing new aquatic experiences.
Remember to consult with your pediatrician for personalized advice on introducing water play to your little one!
