Can tickets only be purchased with cash on-site? Or can they be purchased in advance online with a credit card or other payment methods?

I did not enter Kodaiji Temple, but other attractions were purchased with cash (Japanese yen) on site. I feel that it is more convenient to use cash when the amount is not large.
In addition to being free, tickets to Kyoto’s temples can basically only be purchased on site, and only accept cash. When buying royal guards and other items in temples, they basically only accept cash.
