Jasmine Pavilion is a study hall located 4 kilometers northwest of Lingao Town, Lingao County, Hainan Province. It was originally built by Xie Wo, the magistrate of Lingao County during the Song Dynasty. Xie Wo planted many jasmine flowers in the courtyard, hence the name “Jasmine Pavilion.” In the eighteenth year of the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1148), Jasmine Pavilion welcomed an important guest — Hu Xuan, the忠简公. He was demoted to Jiaying Army (today’s Yalong Town, Sanya City) and was under house arrest. When he passed by Lingao, Xie Wo welcomed him to Jasmine Pavilion and he stayed there for a while. Hu Xuan once wrote a poem here: “Eyes bright, see the end of the world at the Zhejiang post, feet tired, reach the end of the earth” (Title: Jasmine Pavilion). Since then, Jasmine Pavilion has gained greater fame and is regarded as a center for the spread of central plains culture in Lingao.
