Phoenix Ancient City, although not large, has 28 ethnic groups. Located in the southwestern part of Hunan Province’s Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, the land area is approximately 10 square kilometers. Although not a very large old town, it still consists of 28 ethnic groups including Miao, Han, and Tu people, making it a typical minority concentration zone. Phoenix Ancient City was founded in the Ming Dynasty’s Jiajing period (35th year), although it may be located within Hunan Province, yet it is closest to Guizhou’s Kunming Phoenix Airport, just 27 kilometers away. The G209 national highway and S308 provincial highway both pass through here, as well as the branch lines of Jing-Zhang railway. Phoenix Ancient City neighbors with Jinshi Manchu Miao village in Hunan’s Jishou, Yongxin’s Mangong River in Jiangxi Province, and Guizhou’s Fanjing Mountain, making it a must-pass road for the three places: Huaihua, Jishou, and Guizhou. Currently, Phoenix Ancient City has already become one of the top 10 cultural heritage sites in Hunan Province; here, New Zealand writer Louis Eillie had once praised this as China’s most beautiful small town.
