I arrived in the ancient Ganshan Xingjin village in the golden autumn of October. As I slowly walked along the small path paved with volcanic stones in the Jiangdong village, a sight of golden yellow was everywhere: on the path, the walls, the tile roofs, the ditches, and the vegetable fields… As I wandered through the narrow alleys of the village, I inadvertently found myself covered with ginkgo leaves, merging with the afterglow of the sunset… The villagers’ houses are scattered beautifully around the open spaces, with large and small ginkgo trees everywhere in front of and behind the houses. The feeling in the ancient Ganshan Xingjin village is “a field of gold!” In recent years, the villagers have been continuously cultivating young ginkgo trees, about 33,000 in number, covering an area of more than 1,000 acres, which may be the largest, most concentrated, and oldest ginkgo forest found in Yunnan so far. The ginkgo trees in Ganshan Xingjin village are ancient and simple, with life and sound, hidden among the surrounding mountains and visible amidst the smoke of the farmhouses. Compared to the ginkgo trees in the Yunnan University campus, there are fewer disturbances by people, less vulgarity, and no commercial scent at all. A drive of over 40 kilometers from Tengchong county town leads to the ancient Ganshan Xingjin village – Gudong town.
