The 36-Foot Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Fujian Province, named for its water extending outward in a shape resembling thirty-six feet. The total area reaches 2.1 million square meters, with a storage capacity of 12.9 million cubic meters, and the maximum depth can reach 16 meters. The 36-Foot Lake is located in the center of Pingtan, with the lake, sea, mountains, and forests reflecting each other, rock reefs and islets intertwined, and is known as the “Pearl of the Sea Island.” The surrounding erosional landforms are well-developed, with peculiarly shaped stones. It is not only a famous scenic area on Pingtan Island but also the training base for the Fujian Province sailing team. The 36-Foot Lake is an important water source for both living and industrial use in the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Area and is hailed as the “Life Lake” and “Mother Lake” of the Pingtan people. The Qing Dynasty poet Yu Tingying once left a poem at the 36-Foot Lake: “The ripples are like a painting, green as oil, the sunset wind is clear, it is good to sail. The smoke and water of the Thirty-Six Lakes are vast, I don’t know how many autumns I have led?” In 2017, the 36-Foot Lake was listed in the first batch of important wetland名录 in Fujian Province; in 2022, it was listed as the first batch of river and lake cultural heritage in Fujian Province.
