What age can children start skiing? And what precautions should they take?

Generally, most ski resorts and instructors recommend that children are around 4-5 years old before they start taking part in organized skiing lessons. This is because at this stage, kids usually have the physical coordination and attention span to learn basic ski skills.

However, some smaller or beginner-friendly slopes may allow younger children (as young as 3) to participate with adult supervision or specialized tiny tot programs.

When it comes to precautions, here are a few things to keep in mind for little ones on the slopes:

  1. Dress warmly: Dress your child comfortably and warmly, including layers of breathable clothing, gloves, hats, and warm socks.
  2. Choose gentle terrain: Start with simpler trails or designated “bunny hill” areas that have smaller inclines and shorter distances to encourage confidence-building.
  3. Take breaks & stay hydrated: Bring water bottles and snacks (like energy bars) to keep little ones energized throughout the day, as skiing can be physically demanding for young children.
  4. Practice safety drills with instructors: Instructors often teach basic safety skills like stopping quickly or falling safely – so make sure your child knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Remember, always prioritize your child’s comfort level and skill development when introducing them to the world of skiing!
