Dapeng Fortress, full name “Dapeng Defense Commandery Fortress,” is located in the Dapeng New District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, China. It was a military stronghold for coastal defense during the Ming and Qing dynasties, known for its importance as “the most important fortress along the coast.” It is the starting point of the Opium War and also the origin of Shenzhen’s nickname “Dapeng City.”
Dapeng Fortress covers an area of approximately 110,000 square meters and was constructed in the 27th year of the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1394). The city wall is 6 meters high and 1,200 meters long, with 654 battlements and a horse path. The entire city is divided into four gates: East, West, South, and North (the North Gate was blocked during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty). A watchtower is built on top of each gate, and two police posts are set on both sides. Surrounding the fortress on the east, west, and south sides, there is a city moat that is 1,200 meters long, 5 meters wide, and 3 meters deep.
