Chongzuo has a mass grave, namely Da Qing Guo Mass Grave, located within Fengxiang City Friendship Scenic Area in Chongzuo City, Guilin Province. It’s about 400 meters north of Friendship Pass. The mass grave is a battlefield relic from the Sino-French War; it contains remains of part-clear army soldiers who sacrificed their lives during resistance against French troops.

During the war between China and France, officials Feng Zimei et al led Qing military forces to resist French invasion. Many Qing military personnel fell in battle or died as martyrs. After the war, people collected the bodies of those fallen soldiers and buried them here. Due to the large number, it was called a “mass grave”. In 1898, during Qing Emperor Guangxu’s reign (27th year), people set up tombstones at the foot of hills on Qingming Festival; inscriptions read: “Da Qing Guo Mass Grave”. The war memorial monument was completed by Hai Jiong Strong, commanding officer of Nationalist Army’s 188 Regiment in Republican Year 31.
