Chengdu-Hulunbuir self-driving review


Ever since I saw the grassland on TV when I was a child, I have fallen in love with the grassland and dreamed of riding a horse on the grassland.

After growing up, I have learned through the Internet that there are many grasslands in China, among which the Hulun Buir Grassland is NO.1. I used to travel all over the country for work reasons, and once I went to Qiqihar, it was winter and I missed Hulunbeier like this.

In the past few years, I have been preparing for self-driving Hulunbeier, but it is really far away. Baidu Maps recommends that the full speed is 3871KM on one side.


3871km is an astonishing distance. There are high requirements on the driver's experience and physical strength, as well as the stability and reliability of the vehicle.

Before this self-driving, I made a lot of preparations, especially the accumulation of self-driving experience. In the past two or three years, I have driven the following routes with a single driver and bicycle:

1. Chengdu-Huashan-Luoyang-Xi'an-Chengdu 2200km+ (non-jeep)

2. Chengdu-Lanzhou-Xining-Qinghai Lake-Gannan-Norgay-Mao County-Chengdu 3000km+ (jeep guide)

3. Chengdu-Xichang-Kunming-Yuxi-Xishuangbanna-Yibin-Chengdu 3000km+ (jeep guide)

4. Chengdu-Lanzhou-Yinchuan-Wuhai City-Alxa League-Baiyin-Chengdu 3000km+ (jeep guide)

5. Chengdu-Lanzhou-Zhangye-Jiuquan-Jiayuguan-Gannan-Maoxian-Chengdu 3500km+ (jeep guide)

Through the above self-driving, I have accumulated a lot of experience, and my understanding and maintenance of vehicles are clearer.

Long-distance self-driving is no better than short-distance travel. You must have experience and have a full understanding of the condition of the car. (very important, marked red)

Ok, let's cut to the chase. This article will be divided into three parts: preparation for departure, during the journey, and after-the-fact summary.


1. Preparation for departure

1. Vehicle condition inspection and maintenance:

Oil replacement 5w-30 LIQUI MOLY fully synthetic engine oil, enough to cope with a journey of about 10,000 kilometers;

Tire inspection, I bought two Kumho kl33s and replaced the more worn ones, put them on the front wheels of the car, and checked the spare tire pressure;

At the same time, it is necessary to prepare an electric air pump, and bought two bottles of Anetsch tire self-rehydration fluid to deal with tire punctures;

Replace the brake pads, replace the brake fluid; check the vehicle lights, I replaced the fog light relay;

Check the steering wheel oil level, antifreeze level, wiper water (requires more preparations, very useful);,

Replace the vehicle battery (the original car battery has been used for nearly 6 years), and prepare the vehicle's emergency start-up power supply (available on JD.com)

2. Materials

Toilet water, mosquito repellent, etc. Grassland mosquitoes are too scary; one piece of mineral water and one piece of Red Bull (this is a must). Navigation must be used. I personally recommend using Baidu navigation. Real-time traffic conditions must be downloaded offline at the same time. On roads in crowded areas, it is recommended to go with three cards for mobile phones, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, I am deeply touched;

The rest is to bring a camera, selfie stick, etc. according to your hobbies;

3. About hotel accommodation

If it is not a holiday and you have free time, I do not recommend booking a hotel in advance. Wherever you go, it’s fun, beautiful, and tired can be a reason to stop staying


2. Journey

The planned route to go is as follows:

Chengdu-Guangyuan-Xi'an-Weinan City-Yuncheng-Zhangjiakou Zhangbei County-Xilinhot-Arshan-Manzhouli is about 3,800 kilometers in total. I originally expected to arrive in Manzhouli on the fifth day, but it actually arrived on the fourth day. It's better, you can go there in a hurry, and come back slowly.


DAY1: Depart from Wuhou District, Chengdu at 7:45 in the morning, get off the expressway at noon and have lunch in Ningqiang, Shanxi, dinner in Qujiang Service Area, Xi'an, and overnight in Yuncheng, Shanxi. The first day’s itinerary vehicle meter shows 951km, and the navigation is as shown in the figure


Day2: Today should be the most tiring day in the itinerary, the actual driving is about 1300 kilometers ~ Yuncheng-Xilinhot

The tomato fried egg noodles eaten in the high-speed service area for lunch are not bad. The mutton eaten in Zhangbei County, Zhangjiakou for dinner is not bad~


Day3: 700 kilometers today, a total of 2950 kilometers in three days. Xilinhot-Alshan

But today I want to sleep on this section of the road ~ the road conditions are very good, the speed is often measured at 40 in the interval, and then the speed limit is suddenly 20, 30...

Stay in Aershan City tonight, a small but beautiful city


DAY4: Aershan - Play Hulun Lake - Manzhouli - Play Matryoshka Square - Overnight in Liza District, Manzhou (very close to Hulun Buir Grassland)


DAY5: I still live in Liza District, Manzhou today, you can refer to the map for travel:

I played with the Balhu Tribe - and then drove to Ribbon River - Heishantou. In fact, it is better not to live in Liza District, Manzhou that day, and it is better to go to Erguna-Golden Horde Khan by detour to live in Hulunbuir Hailar District.



DAY6: Depart from Liza District, Manzhou, have lunch in a small town called Dashi Niqi, arrive in Harbin at night, and stay next to Sophia Church


DAY7: Play along the Songhua River in Harbin in the morning, and then drive in the direction of Jilin-Liaoning. It happens to meet the Beijing-Harbin Expressway. The Harbin-Changchun Expressway is under construction. It detours the old road and encounters traffic jams. Changchun Ring Expressway, and then overnight in Panshan County, Liaoning. This day was exhausting, mainly due to 1.5 hours of traffic jams and 1.5 hours of detours. .


DAY8: Panshan County departed for Beidaihe to play, and encountered multiple inspections of all vehicles, ID cards and trunk openings, and was congested for a long time. . Stayed overnight in Shengfang Town, Bazhou City, and encountered heavy rain during the process, similar to sailing into the city (fortunately not a car)


DAY9: Depart from Shengfang Town, go to Hukou Waterfall in Shanxi, stay overnight in the scenic area, and eat the big carp of the Yellow River (really unpalatable)

DAY10: I planned to enter the Hukou Waterfall in the morning, but happened to encounter the upstream flood peak, the scenic spot was closed, and I could only overlook it. After watching it, I drove to my home in Chengdu, and encountered construction in the direction of Jingkun, and detoured to Bazhong. At 12 o'clock in the evening Get home. .




3. Post-event summary


It took 10 days to go back and forth this time, the whole journey was 8307km, and the daily average was 830km. In the middle, my mother helped to drive a section of no more than 40km.

The condition of the vehicle is stable and normal, but it is very dirty, and the front of the car is full of dead insects. .

People are still ok, but the last 100 kilometers before home, I drove very slowly and carefully, almost never overtaking (I dare not overtake anymore). The speed limit was 120-100, and I drove 80 yards for the whole journey.

If there is a chance in the future, I hope to drive Hulunbeier again with my lover and children. Of course, the time must be more than 15 days. .
