Known as the "roof of the world", the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the largest plateau in China and the highest in the world. Due to its unique geographical environment and natural conditions, it is covered with a veil of mystery. The Sichuan-Tibet Line of National Highway 318 and the Qinghai-Tibet Line of National Highway 109 pass through the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which provides the possibility for self-driving tour enthusiasts to uncover its mystery and appreciate its unique and magnificent scenery at zero distance.

Traveling into the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau by car is the dream of many people, and of course it is also our dream. But to turn this dream into a reality is not as simple as the popular "take a walk-and-go trip" today, but requires a lot of preparations, including vehicles, materials, body, physical fitness and many other aspects. of.

This self-driving tour of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau lasted 39 days and traveled 12,900 kilometers. They arrived at the base camp of Mount Everest at an altitude of 5,200 meters. They spent nearly a month in activities, sightseeing, and stays on the plateau. As we are getting older, everyone’s mental and physical condition is unexpectedly good, facing the sun and setting off for happiness every day. This shows that self-driving tours in Tibet should not be done on a whim. Otherwise, it will be impossible to adapt to the plateau environment, drive a car safely, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the snowy area, and realize the dream in my heart.

Let’s walk into some issues that everyone is generally concerned about in self-driving tours on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, talk about what you have seen and heard, and share your personal experiences and experiences, hoping to give you some reference and help for those who are preparing to travel; You are inspired and resonate.

1. About road conditions and driving safety

For self-driving travel, the quality of the road conditions is very important, and it is also closely related to driving safety, which is directly related to whether the travel can be smooth, fast and safe. Therefore, road conditions are a matter of great concern to all self-driving tourists.

(1) Sichuan-Tibet Line and Qinghai-Tibet Line

The Sichuan-Tibet Line of National Highway 318 and the Qinghai-Tibet Line of National Highway 109 are not only mature traffic arteries into Tibet that have been in operation for many years, but also regular routes for self-driving tours "in Sichuan and out of Qinghai". Our self-driving tour of "Sichuan in and Qing out" drove about 4,000 kilometers on these two beautiful but dangerous national roads, and the overall evaluation of their road conditions is still good.

After all, it is a national highway. The word "country" must be an important place. The national and local levels still pay more attention. In addition to investing a lot of manpower and material resources for daily maintenance every year, it also invests huge sums of money in upgrading and transforming many road sections. Some widen roads, some cut bends and straighten them, some build tunnels, and some rebuild bridges. Take this series of major measures to ensure that these national highways are smoother and easier to travel every year. The Tongmai Bridge "turns the natural moat into a thoroughfare", which is an example of the disappearance of the Tongmai natural barrier.

However, because the Sichuan-Tibet line passes through the Hengduan Mountains, the geological structure is very active, landslides and mudslides often occur, the road is difficult and dangerous, and it is a road with frequent accidents. Many roads are built along the river valleys between the two mountains. When you drive a car, you may see mountains with falling rocks on one side and turbulent rivers on the other. All of this will undoubtedly increase the difficulty of driving, and sometimes it will make people frightened.

Now the Sichuan-Tibet line is constructing an expressway, from Chengdu to Luding has been completed and opened to traffic, and Luding to Kangding is said to be open to traffic by the end of this year. As for the main control projects along the line, many mountain tunnels have been completed and opened to traffic, and some are also under construction. Therefore, there is a saying on the Internet that "the Sichuan-Tibet line of the 318 National Highway once in a lifetime; the Sichuan-Tibet line of the 318 National Highway in 2017 is the last glory; the Sichuan-Tibet line of the 318 National Highway in 2018 is the final farewell; only because nearly half of the mountains are open to traffic tunnels." reason.

Of course, if you encounter a place where roads are being built, it will be very troublesome. For example, this time when we just entered the Tibet border, we encountered an 80-kilometer-long road construction section, and we had to walk for 4 hours before we could pass. In fact, road construction is dynamic. This time we are building roads when we pass by. Next time you pass by, this section of the road may have been repaired, but other sections of the road will be under construction. In short, with such a long distance, you will always encounter places where roads are repaired. The difference is only long and short, more and less. Therefore, in the itinerary arrangement, these circumstances must be taken into consideration. It is also reported that in mid-July, the Bomi section of the Sichuan-Tibet line of National Highway 318 was blocked by landslides and road interruptions due to heavy rain. Hundreds of vehicles and more than 1,000 people were blocked for a long time. In fact, this kind of situation happens every year during the rainy season. If you travel in this season, you must make sufficient mental and material preparations, so that you will be safe.

Tibet-Mangkang-318 National Highway Sichuan-Tibet Line Road Construction Section

Qinghai-Yushu-109 National Highway Qinghai-Tibet Line Traffic Jam Section

As for the specific road conditions of the Qinghai-Tibet line, compared with the Sichuan-Tibet line, there are many mountain roads with steep slopes and sharp bends. Although the road has to climb several high mountains, generally speaking, most of the road sections are relatively flat. The main feature is the high altitude. Most road sections are built on plateaus above 4,000 meters above sea level; second, the road conditions are poor. Due to the complex geology, harsh environment, especially the permafrost on the plateau, the road is broken and repaired every year, and it is broken every year. The third is that there are many large trucks. There are so many large trucks coming and going, and overtaking has become the norm. Fourth, the road surface and road shoulders are slightly narrower than other national roads. Although it is only slightly narrower, it will still have a certain impact on meeting and overtaking, and objectively increases the risk factor of driving.

(2), Dingri to Everest Base Camp

It is 110 kilometers from Tingri to Everest Base Camp. The current road conditions are very good, and the whole journey is covered with asphalt. Some of the road sections have just been repaired, the road surface is smooth, and the car drives smoothly. It's just that the road surface is slightly narrower than ordinary roads, but fortunately there are no large cars, so it will not have much impact on meeting and overtaking. In the area where the winding mountain roads with steep slopes and sharp bends are relatively concentrated, it is relatively open and open, with good sightlines. As long as you pay attention to it, there will be no problem in controlling the speed of the vehicle. The road conditions have improved. It used to take 5 or 6 hours to travel with extreme bumps, but now it can be reached in less than 3 hours. It saves time and makes it much easier.

(3) Other road sections

This self-driving tour has traveled thousands of kilometers of expressways, and also traveled on the Sichuan-Tibet Line of National Highway 318, the Qinghai-Tibet Line of National Highway 109, and many other national and provincial roads. I feel that no matter what kind of road it is now, most of it is built well done. It’s just that some places have a lot of traffic, some places have narrow roads, some places have steep slopes and sharp bends, some places have severe speed limits, and some places have a lot of tunnels. You should pay more attention when driving for safety.

There are also road sections with poor road conditions, mainly in 3 places. It has been mentioned in the previous article "Self-driving Tour Raiders on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in June and July 2018 (Road Book)", so I won't repeat it here. The lessons learned are very simple, as long as the road conditions are good, don't care about walking more, even if it is dozens of kilometers. It is really disturbing to walk on bad roads, which takes more time and damages the car and consumes fuel.

tips

1. Gas station. Now that the economy is developed, there are so many vehicles in the society, and there are gas stations everywhere. It can be said that if you drive into Tibet by yourself, as long as you take the regular route, as long as your car does not need to be specially selected for Sinopec or PetroChina, there is no problem at all with refueling along the way. According to observations, there are usually more than two or three gas stations in a county, and each town has one or two gas stations; there are even more on expressways, and there will be a service area every few tens of kilometers, and most of them will have gas stations. Station; 109 National Highway Qinghai-Tibet Line is 690 kilometers from Amdo in Tibet to Golmud in Qinghai. There is no county in the middle, but there are several large-scale service areas, refueling, meals, accommodation, and supermarkets. Gone are the days when you had to carry your own fuel tank to walk the line. Even so, on the way of self-driving, you should develop the habit of finding a gas station to refuel as soon as the fuel gauge drops by half, just in case.

2. It is said that Tibet does not charge tolls. In fact, it is the same as Hainan. It should be added to the oil price. In mid-June, the price of No. 92 gasoline was as high as 9.1 yuan per liter, which was about 20%-30% more expensive than in the mainland. Our car is naturally aspirated with a displacement of 2.4 liters. This trip covered a total of 12,900 kilometers, with a total of 10,100 yuan for refueling, an average of 0.78 yuan per kilometer; a total of 3,031 yuan for road and bridge tolls, an average of 0.23 yuan per kilometer. The two items add up to an average of 1.01 yuan per kilometer, which is not too high and is basically within an acceptable range.

3. On the plateau, the car will also be "highly reactive", which is manifested by power attenuation, which may be due to the decrease in oxygen content in the air. According to online reports, when the altitude reaches 5,000 meters, the oxygen content in the air is only half that of the plain. Anyway, you will feel it strongly when driving, especially when climbing a hill, which has a great impact on speeding up and overtaking, especially for cars with small displacement. Therefore, on the one hand, when overtaking, you must pay special attention to this special situation that is different from the plain, and you must have a sufficient safety distance before overtaking; on the other hand, if conditions permit, use a car with a larger displacement to drive more easily able to cope.

4. Whether it is the Sichuan-Tibet line, the Qinghai-Tibet line or other national and provincial roads, most of the speed limits are very severe. The speed limit is for safe driving, but not as low as possible. Along the way, you will encounter many Chinese-style "wonderful speed limits" and "cliff-style speed limits". So be extra careful and attentive when you are driving a car, otherwise, the ticket might get soft. In addition, animals such as cattle and sheep are often encountered along the way, try not to honk, wait patiently before passing, if you accidentally bump into it, it will be very troublesome.

5. On the Sichuan-Tibet Line, you can see all kinds of cars with number plates from all provinces in the country. There are luxurious and large-displacement off-road vehicles and SUVs, and there are many small cars, but most of them are ordinary off-road vehicles and SUVs. As mentioned earlier, the road is so long, there are so many winding roads, and there will be road repairs and bad roads. Then off-road vehicles and SUVs are the best options. After all, the chassis is high, the passing ability is strong, and the climbing is more powerful. In addition, the vehicle should be fully inspected, maintained and maintained before departure. It is best to replace the tires and batteries with brand-new ones, so that long-distance driving is more secure.

6. On the Qinghai-Tibet Line, because the road surface is relatively narrow, large trucks often cross the line. Don’t expect these drivers to give way to you. When you need to overtake, be sure to turn on the turn signal and honk the horn repeatedly, so that the vehicle in front clearly knows what your car is going to do, and then you can overtake. Sometimes the car also needs this.

2. About high countermeasures and preventive measures

Altitude sickness is an old-fashioned problem, but it is also an inevitable problem for everyone who wants to step on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Especially for self-driving tourists, you have to drive while playing. If you have symptoms of altitude sickness, you can temporarily forget about the fun, but what about driving? It is impossible to continue driving with high reaction symptoms and discomfort. You may not be able to drive even if you want to, and if you barely cope, safe driving will be out of the question.

To treat altitude sickness rationally, there is a good saying: "Despise it strategically and attach importance to it tactically." On the one hand, it is very necessary to maintain a normal state of mind, relax, pay attention to rest, ensure sleep, move slowly, and not smoke or drink; Effect.

According to the actual experience of going to the plateau many times and the experience and practices introduced on the Internet, in line with the principle of "attaching importance but not being nervous, bearing but not carrying it hard", the main measures taken are:

One is to take "Nuodikang Capsules" (its main ingredient is "Rhodiola rosea"). Because we couldn’t buy rhodiola oral liquid or capsules here, we bought “Nuodikang Capsules” according to the introduction on the Internet. I have used it many times in the plateau before and the effect is good. It is important to note that it should be taken at least one week before arriving at a high-altitude place, and it cannot be stopped until the plateau;

The second is to drink American ginseng in water as tea. After buying some better American ginseng slices, I use a thermos cup to soak water as tea every day, and take a sip or two from time to time to quench my thirst. After drinking, add water to drink;

The third is to take glucose water. In places with higher altitudes such as Mount Everest Base Camp and Nam Co, in addition to drinking a glass of glucose water after getting up in the morning, you also need to make a pot of high-concentration glucose water, and drink it from time to time on the road and at scenic spots;

The fourth is to take "Gaoyuanan Capsule". After arriving in Lhasa, I will go to the Everest base camp in a few days. To be on the safe side, I bought "Gaoyuanan Capsules" and took them for 5 consecutive days according to the instructions and dosage;

The fifth is to eat vitamin C effervescent tablets and various fruits. I bought vitamin C effervescent tablets in the pharmacy to drink with water, and bought more fruits to eat, the purpose is to enhance the body's resistance;

Six is to ensure adequate sleep. Don't make too tight a schedule. Getting up early and working late at night are only occasional in special circumstances and must not become the norm. Have enough sleep time at night, keep your spirits up, relax your mind, and everything will be fine.

In addition, I also purchased a new type of anti-high anti-reflex drug "Sudayang" produced by a biotechnology company in Shanghai. can also work). Because our group did not experience any discomfort, we have not tried it, and its effect has not been tested.

This series of measures should be said to be fruitful. We are a group of 4 people. Not only did we not experience any discomfort along the way, but our physical condition was very good. I can eat and sleep every day, whether I am driving on the road or visiting the scenery, I am full of energy and full of interest.

tips

1. In addition to taking "Nuodikang Capsules" and other medicines in advance, you must insist on taking them along the way. Don't feel that you won't stop taking them because it will be troublesome if something goes wrong.

2. For self-driving tours on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it is better to take "Sichuan in and Qing out" than "Qing in and Sichuan out", which is also the choice of most self-driving tourists. Because "Chuan Jin Qing Chu" departs from Chengdu, it is equivalent to gradually transitioning from the plains to high-altitude areas, allowing you to have a gradual and gradual adaptation process when entering the plateau; and "Qing Jin Chuan Chu" starting from Golmud, passing After a journey of more than 200 kilometers, you will reach the Kunlun Mountain Pass at an altitude of 4,780 meters. After that, most of the way to Lhasa will be walking on the plateau at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters. There is no time and process for you to adapt to the plateau, which is more likely to cause discomfort and high reaction. This time we stayed on the plateau for so long and even arrived at the base camp of Mount Everest. No one felt uncomfortable. In addition to the above-mentioned effective measures, it is also an important factor to take the Sichuan-Tibet line to enter Tibet step by step and adapt gradually.

3. In these high-altitude places, it is necessary to have some oxygen cylinders in the car, just in case. You can buy it in many places such as pharmacies, and the price is not expensive, so it is a necessary expense.

4. The altitude marked on the "Strategy" is all queried from the Internet and other materials. The data displayed by various materials are different and are for reference only.

3. About seasons and itinerary

Seasons are very important to travel and are inseparable from schedules. Go to the right place in the right season to see the most beautiful scenery is always a wise saying. Driving into the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, due to the long time required, the large span of the region, the special geographical location, the changing climate and environment and other factors, it takes a lot of thought to choose the travel season and time.

It is generally not suitable to drive into Tibet in winter, and the scenery in many places is not beautiful. Although the scenery is better in April and May, it will still snow in some places, and the temperature will be very low when you climb the mountains. It is easy to slip on dark ice roads, and it is more dangerous to drive a car. I went to Tibet twice more than 10 years ago, in July and August, the weather was good, neither hot nor cold. But in recent years, tourism in Tibet has been heating up rapidly, and the popularity is very high. In July and August, summer vacations are superimposed, and there will be more and more tourists.

Weighing the pros and cons of all aspects, it is initially determined to start in mid-June, and the time is about one month. Later, due to the repeated adjustment and enrichment of the route attractions, the itinerary changed a lot until the entire itinerary was extended to 39 days. It is finally determined to start in early June, and the climate and temperature in most places along the way will be more suitable. And I arrived in Qinghai Lake and Menyuan area in early July, which happens to be the season to watch the sea of rapeseed flowers.

The infinite scenery on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is admired by the world; the 318 Sichuan-Tibet line, 30 degrees north latitude, is known as the Chinese landscape scroll and landscape avenue. Along the way, the scenery is picturesque and beautiful. There are so many places and scenic spots to visit and see, and you will feel that it is not enough to give you a few months, but in fact, a few months is impossible. You have to choose the places to visit and the sights to watch according to factors such as the natural scenery along the way, scenic spots, the time you can arrange, and personal hobbies.

It is also necessary to work hard on the selection of scenic spots and the arrangement of the itinerary. Some need to consult a lot of information, and some need to make repeated adjustments. Make the entire itinerary scientific and orderly, tight and loose, and tight and tight, so that you can watch everything you need to see and play everything you need to play. A total of 12,900 kilometers, an average of about 330 kilometers per day. During the period, we specially arranged to stay in Ranwu Lake, Lulang Town, Basongcuo, Qilian and other places far away from the hustle and bustle, with beautiful and quiet environment, where you can relax; arrange more stays in Nyingchi, Lhasa, Golmud, Xining and other cities a little time. On the one hand, you can have a deeper understanding of the local customs and style, and taste the unique catering culture; on the other hand, you can have sufficient time to rest, soothe your spirit, relax your mind, and eliminate fatigue, which is conducive to maintaining a good mental and physical state and continuing to move forward. OK.

tips

1. If you have the conditions, you really don’t want to join in the fun in July and August. Not only are there crowded people and traffic jams, but some places are also ridiculously expensive to live in.

2. For long-distance self-driving tours, you should set aside a little time to rest and recuperate at intervals in the itinerary, especially on the plateau. Otherwise, you have to drive and play every day, and it will be really tiring after a long time. A tight schedule, physical fatigue, lack of sleep, driving safety cannot be guaranteed, and it is also easy to cause altitude sickness.

3. It takes more than 17 hours to travel 830 kilometers from Naqu to Golmud by taking the Qinghai-Tibet line of National Highway 109; it takes more than 14 hours to travel from Amdo to Golmud, which is 690 kilometers. Hour). This is a regular way of walking, which is very hard and tiring. This time, after on-the-spot investigation here, I realized that although there is no county seat in the middle, the scale of several service areas is quite large, and there are some small hotels and guesthouses, where you can also settle down and stay overnight. How bad is Andor. If you divide the several hundred kilometers into two, it won't be so hard, and you won't be in such a hurry to enjoy the scenery along the way.

4. This season on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the sky is bright at 7 o'clock in the morning, and the sun is still very strong at 6 or 7 o'clock in the evening, and it will not get dark until close to 9 o'clock. So walking this way, one day can be used for almost one and a half days, which is very convenient for itinerary arrangement.

5. To go to the base camp of Mount Everest, you need to apply for a border defense certificate. It is simple and free of charge to handle the procedures at the place of residence; you can also entrust a travel agency in Lhasa, but it will cost a little handling fee. Holders of Hong Kong and Macao Home Return Permits can entrust a travel agency to handle it in Lhasa, and then go to the Shigatse Public Security Bureau to go through the filing procedures as required, and there will be inspections at the checkpoint on the way to the Everest Base Camp, remember.

4. About accommodation and meals along the way

The current tourism industry is very developed. Whether it is the Sichuan-Tibet line, the Qinghai-Tibet line or other places, there are many hotels and restaurants everywhere, and food and accommodation are not a problem. But it is not easy to live comfortably and eat delicious food.

Accommodation is the bulk of travel expenses, and hotel prices vary greatly, so its plasticity is also great. Now there are hotels and guesthouses everywhere, and there is a lot of room for choice. Considering that self-driving travel is quite hard, and most of the time is on the plateau, it is very important to have a good rest and ensure sleep. Therefore, the grade of choosing to stay in a hotel this time is higher than when traveling by car in other places in the past. Places like Ranwu Lake, Lulang, Nyingchi, and Xining are quite high-grade, and of course the price will be higher.

The Sichuan-Tibet line, the Qinghai-Tibet line, Qinghai, Gansu and many other places are now popular areas for tourism. Along the way, I feel that the cost of accommodation is generally high. In many ordinary farmhouse-style small hotels or guesthouses, a standard room costs more than 200 yuan. In scenic spots, the price of accommodation will be higher, and an ordinary standard room will cost at least 500 yuan. The average cost of our stay this time was about 280 yuan per room per night. The price is much higher than the average price when traveling by car in the past, but the overall stay is good, only two or three places are a little bit worse.

The general catering industry in Tibet, Qinghai, and Gansu is basically monopolized by Sichuan cuisine, and Sichuan cuisine restaurants are everywhere. If you eat spicy food and get used to the taste, eating is easy. But this is a big problem for us Cantonese. First of all, you can't eat spicy food; second, the dish is too salty, so you can't eat it either. It’s just that every time I order food, I will repeatedly explain not to put chili and less salt, but probably because of habit, the dishes I make are often too spicy and salty to eat. There is no way, sometimes I can only eat a little after drinking a bowl of boiling water.

If you go out for a few days, it’s okay to deal with it sloppily for a while, but it’s really unbearable after a long time. Just imagine, if you don’t eat well every now and then, how can you have the physical strength to cope with such a long-distance self-driving trip? Our solution is that in larger cities, where there is room for choice, we can choose suitable restaurants to eat; in small counties and places, we often cook by ourselves. As for lunch, I often eat noodles. Of course, most of them can only eat noodles in clear soup.

tips

1. Parking for self-driving tours should be considered, especially in cities, especially in big cities. When booking a hotel, be sure to find out whether there is a parking place, whether to charge or not, and how to charge.

2. Try to book a hotel with breakfast. Otherwise, if you are not familiar with the place, sometimes you have to walk a lot and spend a lot of time just to have breakfast.

3. It depends on the specific situation whether to book the hotel or find it after arriving at the place. Peak season or popular scenic spots are now overcrowded everywhere, so you must book in advance; general seasons and places are different. The advantage of booking in advance is that when you arrive at a place, you can go straight to the hotel instead of running around to find it.

4. In places with an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters and above, a pressure cooker is required to cook rice and noodles. We brought a pressure cooker, stewing pot, rice cooker, induction cooker, bowls and chopsticks, as well as rice, dried noodles, canned fish (meat) and other food and condiments when we went out. We even bought a 18-liter portable car refrigerator for anytime, anywhere It can supplement fresh ingredients, which is very convenient and practical, and so on. It is convenient to bring more things in your own car, and you will know how good it is when you use it. There are 4 people in a 7-seater car, and the luggage is still full.

5. The logistics industry in modern society is very developed. Even Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, etc., which were considered to be relatively remote places before, are full of things in shops and markets, and all kinds of fresh vegetables and fruits can be said to be everything. The price of meat, beef, and mutton is mostly cheaper than that in the mainland, and it is very convenient to buy ingredients and cook by yourself.

The words written in the back: I have been fortunate to travel to Tibet three times in my life. Although the scenery and what I saw and heard along the way are roughly the same, the mental journey is quite different. As the saying goes, "Although the scenery is the same, the mood is different every time you look at it." For more than ten years, what has changed is the ever-changing construction style of various parts of Tibet, as well as the crowded tourists at popular scenic spots; what has not changed is the heart of seeking, exploring and awe of the snow-covered plateau. Especially for this self-driving tour, in addition to realizing dreams, it is more important to have a deep appreciation of the rich and colorful cultural landscape along the way, and personally feel the unique charm of the snow-covered plateau. It should be said that it was an eye-opener and a fruitful experience, and it is a rare training and experience in life.

Thank you so much for your love and support! We are very grateful for such a rare travel opportunity! I appreciate having such great physical fitness! Each of us is genuinely happy and proud. To be able to realize such a dream and travel like this, isn't our life so exciting and lucky?
