3. Zhongwei Drum Tower
The Drum Tower is located in the center of Zhongwei City. It was named Wenchang Pavilion in the early Qing Dynasty and was built in the fourth year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1631 A.D.). In the 22nd year of Jiaqing in Qing Dynasty (AD 1817), the temple was accidentally burned down during the temple fair on July 14, leaving only the foundation site. In the eleventh year of Daoguang (AD 1831), Ai Chunnian, the magistrate of the county, led the canonist Shen Yuan and the local gentry to donate money to rebuild it, and it was completed the next year.
After liberation, the Drum Tower was highly valued by the local government. In 1955, the government of Zhongwei County allocated special funds for repairing the bricks covering the Drum Tower; in 1984, it was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit at the county level in the former Zhongwei County; Make the Drum Tower stand in the center of the city with a brand-new look.
The base of the Drum Tower is rectangular, 224 meters long from north to south and 1665 meters wide from east to west. In the center of the base is a cross-shaped door opening, which leads to the streets on all sides. The door opening is 3.75 meters high, with a dome in the center and a gossip caisson in the middle. Around the gossip map are hanging wooden statues of the Eight Immortals, and the four corners are embedded with stone dragon heads, facing each other proudly. There are plaques on the gates on all sides of the base, which reflect the geographical shape of Zhongwei according to their orientation. Its east is called "Locking Bronze", the south is called "Dianzhi Xiangyan", the west is called "Shuangyisha Mountain", and the north plaque was originally "Controlling Border Barbarians". When it was repaired in 1984, it was changed to "control the frontier" in accordance with the party's ethnic policy and the principle of cultural relics maintenance.
The Drum Tower is 23 meters high and 30 meters high. The double building has three floors. It is a pavilion building with a square base and an arch hole. In the middle of the base is the main building with triple eaves and a cross-shaped gable top, with 3 bays on each side, 3 floors and 3 eaves, each floor has 12 corners, and the top floor has viewing corridors on all sides. There are 4 small accompanying buildings built around the foundation, the inner walls of which are respectively engraved with the background, time, process and related matters of the beginning and reconstruction of the Drum Tower. The original statues on each floor were demolished in 1951. In October 1992, in the spirit of restoring the original appearance of cultural relics, the former Zhongwei County Cultural Relics Management Office raised funds to restore them after obtaining the consent of relevant departments. The upper layer is made of Kuixing, the middle layer is made of Wenchang, and the lower layer is surrounded by Lei Zu, God of Wealth, Fire Emperor Zhenjun and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
