Alxa League Tengger Desert hinterland Perseid meteor rain season

The sun sets on the long river, and the stars move. Standing here, it seems as if you can hear Xixia's Helan Mountain cavalry roaring past. Suddenly, I saw the lightning cloud shining brightly hundreds of kilometers away, and the meteor had pierced the bright starry sky.

—— "Ningxia Zhongwei: Meeting Tengger" by Wang Yi 1978

meet tengger

【Picture Story】

Tengri, Mongolian Mongke Tengri, meaning Tengger God, is the highest god in Mongolian religion, and it is the spiritual totem of the nomadic people in North Asia.

The Tengger Desert is the fourth largest desert in China. It has the Great Wall in the south, Helan Mountain in the east, and Yabulai Mountain in the west. It is 240 kilometers long from north to south and 160 kilometers wide from east to west, with a total area of about 43,000 square kilometers. The Tengger Desert is located in the part of Zhongwei City in Ningxia, on the southeastern edge of the desert.

I have visited Ningxia three times to give lectures, and I passed by the Tengger Desert. This time I met Tengger, and I was fortunate to lift her mysterious veil.

【Picture Story】

At midnight at night, under the guidance of Daliang (the person in charge of the desert camp here), we drove into the hinterland of Zhongwei Tengger Desert. The car passed a flat sand dune and parked for a rest. The bright moonlight just happened to illuminate our jeep from the back. He also brought his SLR equipment to me to learn how to shoot the starry sky. I taught him some basic operations. He has a high understanding and quickly learned the basic operations.

In the photo, Zhongwei City in the distance is dimly lit, the sky is full of bright stars, and the rare lightning cloud (lower left corner) is shining brightly, full of magical atmosphere like the picture of the movie "Lord of the Rings". The star track in the north direction is like a huge space-time tunnel, which can suck our off-road vehicles and travel through time and space at any time. The gold and iron horses during the Mengxia War seem to be waiting for us at the other end of the tunnel.

【Picture story】

In the early morning, a round of red sun rises from the end of the desert. It was my first time camping in the desert. I was not used to the cold nights in the desert, the cold wind outside the tent, and the excitement of encountering the Perseid meteor shower. I almost stayed up all night—but all the fatigue disappeared at this moment.

【Picture story】

Daliang, the person in charge of the desert camp, leased the right to use the 5,000-acre desert for 10 years, and creatively combined the study tour with the theme of the desert. Therefore, besides adults, there is an endless stream of children and tourists who come here to study. Desert surfing, camel riding, barbecue, starry sky, hiking, sunset viewing, sunrise, sand boarding, volleyball, desert water play and other theme elements are all available, making this desert well-organized and vibrant. At sunset, I saw me taking pictures of other tourists, and enthusiastically invited me to take another group photo for everyone. Before the sunset, Xiao Wang helped fill in the light and left Daliang this cool photo of a car model.

【Picture story】

Teacher Li's family, his family specially traveled from Shanghai to Zhongwei Tengger. He was born in Zhongwei, and his family settled in Shanghai. Mr. Li loves his Shanghai wife and children very much. It can be seen that after years of regional cultural influence, he has been completely assimilated into a "Shanghai good man". I am honored to take this picture for their family A happy family portrait.

【Picture story】

Xiao Wang, a gentle and beautiful Jiangnan girl, is different from girls of the same age in her persistence, stability and boldness. She is less than 20 years old and has just finished the college entrance examination. She came to Tengger alone in the desert from Jiaxing, a land of fish and rice thousands of miles away. At sunset, I asked her why a young girl came to Tengger alone, and she replied that she wanted to come out and exercise herself—an inspirational answer, and the self-motivation of young people is very admirable. Later, I learned that in order to travel alone and get rid of the financial dependence on parents, the girl had worked as a temporary worker for a whole month to raise travel expenses, which deepened this admiration.

The picture above was taken in a duty hut deep in the desert of the camp. Although the structure of the hut is simple, from the shape to the lighting, the head of the camp, Liang Liang, designed it himself. It is full of ingenuity. Daliang took us to his architectural work and arranged the lighting. I asked Xiao Wang to sit on the steps and make a good posture. I used the flashlight as a support to illuminate the girl's hair and outlined the beautiful beauty. Contour light, with the Big Dipper as the background of the sky, combines the starry sky, the hut, the warm light of the ground lamp, the ingenuity of the owner, and the courage, dignity and beauty of the girl. At this time, a shooting star happened to pass by the North Celestial Pole. Under the gaze of Polaris, in the depths of the dark and silent desert, I was lucky enough to complete this work.

【Picture story】

Brother Miao, 20 years old, handsome and sunny, the guide and driver of this trip, with thoughtful service throughout the whole process, can actively suggest the itinerary. From picking up people at the hotel in Yinchuan to sending the guests to the airport, they are very responsible.

【Picture story】

Zheng Xiaoge, the leader of the desert camp, gave me the impression of only one word "cool". The organization of every activity in the camp, from camp arrangement, tent pick-up, tent demonstration, breakfast making, and desert trekking, is very meticulous and serious. In my free time, I often drive a desert model to inspect, giving every visitor a strong sense of security.

【Picture story】

Bonfire after nightfall. In the desolate desert, the visiting tourists hold hands, singing and dancing around the bonfire. In the hinterland of Zhongwei Tengger Desert, the people who come here seem to be a family regardless of each other.

【Picture story】

Passing through the hinterland of Zhongwei Tengger Desert, meteors streaked across the sky. It is now the Perseid meteor rain season, one of the three major meteor showers in the northern hemisphere. There is an endless desert and a vast starry sky. Looking up at the sky, human beings are so insignificant.

【Picture story】

At night, the ladder in the camp seems to lead directly to the North Celestial Pole where the Big Dipper is located.
