According to legend, during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang named Fu Youde, Marquis of Yingchuan, as the leader of the expedition to the south, and led thousands of troops to Yunnan. He brought his own royal chef Li Haiying along with him. He was known as "Li Roasted Duck" in Nanjing.
