The overall station length of Nanjing East Railway Station is more than 8 kilometers, with 126 station lines, the total length of the line is 120 kilometers, and 422 sets of turnouts. The entire marshalling operation has been electrified, computerized, and double-pushed, single-slip, and one-way hump.

The railway marshalling station is the core of the railway hub, the base for the collection and distribution of trains and the unmarshalling of trains, known as the "train factory". The so-called "marshalling" is to rearrange and combine freight trains from all over the world according to their destinations, and then distribute them to all parts of the country. Nanjing East Railway Station is one of the important marshalling stations in East China. It undertakes the disintegration and marshalling tasks of freight trains on the Beijing-Shanghai, Ningtong, Ningqi and Ningxi railways. Passenger services are not handled here, only the delivery of whole vehicles for road use is handled.

Since 1984, ND5 has been assigned to various locomotive depots in large quantities, among which Nanjing East Locomotive Depot has the largest number, and nearly 200 ND5 locomotives are allocated at peak times, and are jointly controlled and operated by Bengbu, Nanjing East, and Nanxiang Locomotive Depots, serving as the Jinpu Railway Heavy-duty freight train traction tasks for the southern section, Shanghai-Nanjing Railway, and Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway. So far, some ND5 locomotives have reached the operating deadline. Since the popularization of electrified railways, many freight jobs in ND5 have been replaced by electric locomotives. Now ND5 is more used as station shunting, and sometimes it also acts as a link traction locomotive.
