In late May 2019, when we were traveling to Qianhu Miao Village in Xijiang, Guizhou, a sudden heavy rain disrupted our itinerary, and we decided to leave early. The photo was taken at the sightseeing station of the scenic spot.

Unexpectedly, when we arrived at the gate of Qianhu Miao Village in Xijiang, the rain stopped. In the square in front of the gate of the Miao Village Scenic Area, we also happened to meet the ceremony of "welcoming wine at the door".

At about 9:00 in the morning, the "Welcome Wine" at the gate of the Miao Village Scenic Area began. Beautiful Miao girls dressed in costumes, holding horn cups filled with fine wine, stood neatly outside the door and sang along to the song. Dance to welcome the arrival of guests from all over the world.

An imposing old man with long beard stood in the lead. The Miao family lined up on the left and right, divided into four rows. On the two sides in front were the Miao family men in simple and elegant black suits, playing various instrumental music. They are colorful and gorgeously dressed Miaozi girls.

This is an ancient custom and etiquette of the Miao family, and it is also the most hospitable way of hospitality of the Miao people today-bar door wine.

The old man with long beard is the first barrier to drink. The first drink is called congratulations wine. Expressed the warm and hospitable wishes of the Miao people. The old man held high the ox horn cup full of good wine, and warmly welcomed friends from afar.

When a tourist comes, the old man with long beard will enthusiastically deliver the wine in the horn cup to the mouth of the tourist.

After toasting a glass of wine, the long-bearded old man will pour a second glass of wine until you stop drinking. Banmen wine expresses the sincerity and respect of the Miao family. It is as strong as wine and as pure as mountain springs. And when blocking the door, the more the guests drink, the happier the Miao family will be. This means that the guests look up to the Miao family and respect the Miao family. The photo was taken at the ceremony of "Welcome to Bar the Door" in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village.

There are generally two types of wine used in barman wine, one is grain-wrapped wine, which is brewed by the Miao family from the grain grown by themselves. Usually men drink it. The other is glutinous rice wine, which is also called sweet wine by Miao people. This kind of wine is made from a kind of round glutinous rice that grows in the clouds and mist in alpine mountainous areas, and is brewed by women. The wine is thick, cool, sweet, fragrant, and pleasant in taste. It is suitable for men, women, old and young. The Xijiang Miao nationality is one of the important representatives of the Miao nationality in Southeast Guizhou. The language belongs to the northern sub-dialect of the central dialect of the Miao-Yao branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The text used here is the common Chinese language. Although the Chinese language is an essential language tool for the Xijiang Miao people to communicate with the outside world, the language communication between the Miao people still uses the traditional Miao language. The long table banquet in Qianhu Miao Village in Xijiang is the highest form and grand etiquette of Miao banquets, with a history of thousands of years. Long table banquets are usually used for weddings, full moon wine, and village party banquets. The left side of the long table banquet is the host's seat, and the right side is the guest's seat. The host and the guest faced each other, toasted and persuaded to drink and sang to the wine. Originally, I wanted to learn about the folk customs and customs of the Miao family through the long-table banquet, but I didn’t expect the tour guide to change it to Qianduoduo restaurant for dinner on the previous night on the excuse that we were not used to the long-table banquet in Qianhu Miao Village in Xijiang.

Looking at the data, the long table banquet generally includes traditional dishes of the Miao nationality such as planed soup, cured meat, ancient Tibetan meat, Miao king fish, white-cut chicken, wild free meat, Qingyan tofu, leek root, etc. But our long table dinner is still a few dishes that are exactly the same as the dinner on the first day.

The slight difference from the previous night was that the original round table became a long table.

Another difference is that at the "Long Table Banquet" at noon, there are girls in Miao costumes toasting. The girls held wine jugs and sang songs: You like to drink one cup, and you don't like to drink three cups, you can drink it whether you like it or not...

It is said that this form of toast is called "Mountain and Flowing Water". After drinking a bowl and a pot, whether you can drink it or not, you will be drunk today!
