In front of the door of Zhuangshang Tulou is a large pond. Like many Hakka Tulou, a pond is set at the entrance, which conforms to the law of Fengshui. This is a major feature of Hakka architecture. Standing outside the earth building, one can see the emerald green water, the blue sky, and the high and low peaks of Lingtong Mountain in the distance, just like a pile of green peaks. Facing this scene, I am really intoxicated as a tourist!
The size of the Zhuangshang Tulou is incredible. From a distance, only part of the outer wall of the Tulou can be seen. The layout of this tulou is square, but the four corners are consciously rounded. It is said that Zhuangshang Tulou has a circumference of more than 700 meters and a maximum diameter of 220 meters. The perimeter of a standard middle school playground is 400 meters. It is hard to imagine how long the perimeter of this earth building is. Zhuangshang Tulou has a construction area of more than 9,000 square meters and covers an area of more than 34,000 square meters. The internal building of the earth building is divided into two rings, the inner and outer rings, both of which are wooden beams with buckets, and the outer ring has three floors, with a total of 142 units.
The residents of the tulou were all the Ye family in history. At the time of hearing the most, there were more than 180 households living in the tulou, and there were more than 1,800 people. The building of the two-entry ancestral hall is similar to the Chaoshan building "Tiger Down the Mountain", which reminds me of the many ancestral halls in the Chaoshan area of eastern Guangdong. The Hakka people, like the Chaoshan people, have ancestors from the Central Plains, so they attach great importance to the clan culture. This ancestral hall is the embodiment of the cohesion of the Hakka clan. There are four ancestral halls in the Zhuangshang tulou, which is rare for ordinary tulou, which only has one ancestral hall at most.
