The Altai Mountains are on the windward side of the humid westerly airflow, and the damp and cold airflow in the southwest brings abundant rain and snow. The snow water flows southward along the slope, converging into the two major water systems of the Irtysh River and the Ulungu River, which nourish the pastures for thousands of miles and become an important base for animal husbandry in Xinjiang.

There are 420 glaciers in the Altai Mountains, with a total area of 293 square kilometers. The peaks and mountains above 4,000 meters above sea level are frozen all year round, but the mountains below are full of flowers, and the vertical distribution of vegetation and soil is very obvious. In the western foothills of the Altai Mountains, there are lush temperate deciduous coniferous forests, mainly Siberian larch, accompanied by Siberian spruce, white birch, etc., and many rare birds and animals haunt them. Quintas and many other nature reserves are hidden and mysterious.

On the steep and majestic rocks of this mountain range, there are petroglyphs left by ancient nomads more than 2000-3000 years ago. Therefore, this mountain range is called "Altay Mountain Thousand Li Rock Art Gallery".

Rock paintings in the Altai Mountains are masterpieces of art that have been continuously supplemented by nomadic peoples from generation to generation. They are divided into two types: rock carvings and colored paintings. Most of the content is grazing, dancing, religious activities and images of domestic animals and wild animals. The distribution of petroglyphs is relatively concentrated and the transportation is also convenient. The "Yuyitas" petroglyph group is located in Qiemuerqieke Township, about 25 kilometers southwest of Altay City. There is a petroglyph here with a length of 15.6 meters and a height of 2 meters. It is currently the largest in the Altai Mountains. In addition, about 30 kilometers south of Altay City, the rock paintings of Que'erhai and Duolatgou in Khandegat Mongolian Nationality Township are also very distinctive. Dogs, cows, horses, camels, deer and other animal images.
