Xiongxian County was known as Xiongzhou in ancient times. It was a frontier fortress in the Northern Song Dynasty and a battleground for military strategists. Today, there are many war relics in Xiongxian County, among which the ancient tunnels of the Song and Liao border passes are typical.

During the Northern Song Dynasty, this was the junction of Song and Liao. It is said that Yang Yanzhao, a famous general of the Northern Song Dynasty, guarded here for 16 years without losing an inch of land. Xiong County is located in a plain area, so there is no danger to rely on on the battlefield. Yang Yanzhao's repeated victories are not unrelated to the tunnels built at that time.

Since 1964, green brick structures have been discovered in Qigang, Guzhuangtou, and Xing villages in Xiong County due to irrigation and soil borrowing activities. Experts identified them as underground passages used for military defense during the Song and Liao dynasties.

Tunnels have three military uses: one is to hide and transport troops; the other is to quickly transmit information; the third is to use acoustic principles to monitor the enemy's situation. Sauce glaze vats, projectiles, iron arrowheads, etc. have been unearthed in ancient tunnels.
