In order to realize the desire to develop the new city of Shihezi, in August 1950, the Corps established a survey team of the 22nd Corps with more than 30 people. The reconnaissance team is composed of engineers and technicians and soldiers, and went to Shihezi in late August to start sampling and reconnaissance. The comrades of the survey team are divided into three groups, two groups of drilling teams, drilling wells in different places at the same time; a group of logistics team, responsible for the life of all survey team members. The vast wasteland was full of pebbles, and the comrades of the survey team only had simple shovel tools in their hands. In this way, they started the arduous work of drilling wells.
They first selected No. 1 and No. 2 well digging points on the northeast oblique line and southwest oblique line of Shihezi, then began to discuss the method of drilling wells, and decided to make their own "excavator". They went to the Post Office of Suilai County (now Manas County) to buy six waste electric poles, and made two custom-made elm pulley hooks. They also cut elm strips to weave their own tree baskets, and bought two large ropes. And these materials are divided into two parts, which are installed at the No. 1 and No. 2 excavation points respectively. The three telegraph poles form a large triangular frame, under which a pulley is hung, and a well rope about 20 meters long is hung on the pulley. A simple "excavator" started work. In just ten days, the No. 1 well came out with water.
Today, people walking along the forest path southeast of the recreation square 200 meters south of the Shihezi Science and Technology Museum can still see the first military well. The diameter of the wellhead is about 3 meters, and the depth of the well is 18-20 meters. The water flows from southeast to northwest. Because the purpose of digging this well was only to detect whether there was water underground in Shihezi, the well was not used or built, and was soon filled with soil. In 1992, the People's Government of Shihezi City decided to use it as a cultural relic protection site for restoration and protection.
