Benzilan is a small Tibetan town on the Jinsha River, which means "beautiful sandbar" in Tibetan. It is an important post on the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
Benzilan belongs to Deqin County, Yunnan Province, across the river from Derong County, Sichuan Province. Located on the main road from northwest Yunnan to Tibet and Sichuan, it has been an important town on the ancient tea-horse road since ancient times. When caravans traveling along the Yunnan-Tibet line come to Benzilan Town, they will stop to rest and replenish, and hire Tibetan guides who are familiar with the situation here to lead the caravan across the White Horse Snow Mountain and continue north into Tibet.
Because it is located on the main road of the Yunnan-Tibet line, with the development of tourism in Yunnan and Tibet, Benzilan has become a bustling and diverse town.
