The Bezeklik Thousand-Buddha Cave was dug in the late Southern and Northern Dynasties, and has been one of the centers of Buddhism in the Western Regions throughout the Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, and Yuan dynasties. There were originally 83 caves, and among the 57 existing caves, 40 have murals. Among them, the murals of No. 20 cave have images of Uighur King Gaochang and his queen. On the back wall of Cave 33, there is a painting expressing the intention of the disciples silently mourning after the Buddha's Nirvana, while Cave 38 is a cave reflecting the life of the ancient Manichaeism. Caves 82 and 83 are small memorial caves specially built for eminent monks in Buddhist temples during the powerful Uighur Kingdom of Gaochang in the 10th and 11th centuries AD. Uighur Gaochang was the prosperous period of the grottoes. At the end of the 13th century AD, the royal family of Gaochang moved eastward to Yongchang, Gansu, and after Islam was introduced to Turpan, Buddhism gradually declined, and Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves declined accordingly. dig up. At the beginning of this century, it was repeatedly robbed and destroyed by foreigners, which made things worse and changed beyond recognition. Even so, the Buddha seat of the robbery is gorgeous and exquisite, and the remaining murals are rich in content and colorful, which is still a large-scale cultural and artistic treasure house. If you want to appreciate the essence of the murals in this grotto, I am afraid you can only go to the Museum of Indian Art in Berlin, Germany. To commemorate Tang Monk’s master and apprentice passing through here, there is a sculpture of four masters and apprentices not far from the scenic spot. The shape comes from the 1986 TV series "Journey to the West". Behind the sculpture is the Flame Mountain.
