Black oil mountain is located in the northeast of Karamay, more than two kilometers away from the city center. Its appearance is a low hill with a relative height of only 13 meters and an area of about 0.2 square kilometers. The whole hill is black, with uneven surface, composed of sandstone soaked by oil or conglomerate condensed by oil. Due to the overflow of volatile components in oil, a large area of the surface is dry.
Karamay" means "black oil" in Uighur, so this natural oil asphalt hill is named Black Oil Mountain. This black asphalt hill and its buried oil have been sleeping here for hundreds of millions of years. There are many oil deposits on the hill The spring forms many small oil swamps, with oil bubbles constantly gushing out in the middle. The oil is viscous and dark in color. On the top of the hill, there is a granite stele erected in 1982, which is in the shape of a cone and is 2.5 meters high. Three large characters of "Heiyoushan" are engraved on the front.
The surrounding scenery of Heiyou Mountain is extraordinary, facing Devil City in the east, Xiaoguai Oasis of Manas River in the west, and Genghis Khan Mountain in the back. A Heiyoushan Park has been built nearby. There is a small pavilion on an isolated island in the park. Beside the pavilion are three fossilized pine trees more than 200 million years ago, which are rare treasures. In order to carry forward the spirit of hard work, the Xinjiang Petroleum Administration Bureau and Karamay City erected a nearly 3-meter-high stone monument on October 1, 1982 and a statue of an old Uighur riding a donkey and playing Rewap on Heiyou Mountain.
