Butuo Lake is a general name for two alpine lakes of different sizes, Butuo Cuoqing and Butuo Cuoqiong, located about 25 kilometers north of Dingqing County. The snow peak to the north of Butuo Cuoqing is the Tanggula Mountains, where modern glaciers develop, and the meltwater from glaciers is the main source of supply for the lake. The lake freezes in November and thaws in April of the following year. The lake is rich in fish, and there are many swans, wild ducks and other birds inhabiting it. The lake is surrounded by wide valley basins, with open terrain and rich pastures. It is a summer pasture for several towns near Dingqing County.
