Lincang Cliff Painting Valley is located in Menglai Township, north of Cangyuan County, Lincang Prefecture. It is famous for its ancient cliff paintings with a history of more than 3,500 years. A total of 11 cliff paintings have been discovered so far, which vividly show the hunting, herding, dancing, sacrifice and other activities of Wa ancestors, with rich content, concise structure and unique style.
Since 1965, archaeological experts have successively discovered 11 cliff painting sites in Menglai, Dinglai, Manqia, Heping, Manyang, Mengxing and other places in the north-central part of Cangyuan County. Most of these cliff paintings are located 2-10 meters above the ground. On the vertical cliff wall with a height of 1 meter, the area of the painting ranges from 1 to 30 meters. The graphics include figures, animals, houses, roads, various ideographic symbols, trees, boats, sun, clouds, mountains, and the earth. "Dandem" means paintings on rocks. The cliff paintings use ochre-red paint to spend on the gray limestone. The characters are in various poses and with different expressions, lifelike, and vividly reproduce the life scenes of ancient humans.
The color of Cangyuan Cliff paintings will change with the sunshine, cloudy weather and other factors. The local people say that it "changes three times a day, red in the morning and light in the afternoon, and purple in the evening", which is quite magical.
