The site is located in the playground of Petroleum Hope Primary School in the west of Yanchang County. It is the predecessor of Yanchang Oilfield, "Yangchang Petroleum Official Factory". Founded in 1905, it is an early oil field developed onshore in China.
There is oil in northern Shaanxi, which was first seen in the "Hanshu Geography" written by Ban Gu, a famous historian in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is recorded in "Pen Tan" and put forward the scientific name of "petroleum". In November of the 30th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1904), Cao Hongxun, governor of Shaanxi Province, asked for a trial run of the Yanchang Petroleum Factory, and was granted permission. In 1905, the "Yanchang Petroleum Official Factory" was established. In the 33rd year of Guangxu (1907), a technician named Sato Yaichiro was hired to survey Yanyi at the west gate of Yanchang County and obtain industrial oil flow. The oil production of this well ended the history of no oil production on land in China.
