Dayun Temple - China Travel

Dayun Temple is located in Shangluo City and was built in the Tang Dynasty (690 A.D.). The existing Dayun Temple covers an area of 8,000 square meters, and the four main halls basically maintain their original appearance. It is now a provincial key cultural relic protection unit. There is a mural of "Five Precepts Jataka" in Dayun Temple, which describes the five stories of the origin of the Buddhist "Five Precepts" (abstaining from killing, stealing, prostitution, lying, and drinking). The murals are painted on the east wall of the Daxiong Hall of Dayun Temple. The five groups of paintings are arranged from right to left and from top to bottom.

In the Tang Dynasty, Wu Zetian borrowed the words "Maitreya will be born as a queen and conquer the world" in the "Dayun Jing" to change Tang to Zhou and become the first female emperor in Chinese feudal society. The Great Cloud Classic, preaching that "kingdom is bestowed by heaven". As soon as the edict came out, Dayun Temples were built one after another all over the country. In 705 A.D., Li Xian, Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang Dynasty ascended the throne and restored the Tang Dynasty, and ordered the Dayun Temple to be destroyed. At that time, most of the Dayun Temples across the country were completely destroyed. Dayun Temple in Shangzhou survived because it was renamed "Xiyan Temple" by local officials. It was renamed back to its original name when it was restored in the Yuan Dynasty.
