The Datong Drum Tower was first built in the Ming Dynasty, and was rebuilt during the Shunzhi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty. It is a relatively well-preserved and large-scale Ming and Qing Drum Tower in Shanxi and even the whole country.


The Drum Tower is three stories high, and it is a cross-hill building with three rooms in width and depth. There are doors on all sides of the pavilion, corridor railings around it, and wooden stairs on the bottom floor. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Drum Tower was the place to tell the time and alarm in the whole city. It was equipped with "copper clepsydra" and "dinggeng drum" for measuring time.


Plaques are hung on all sides of the Drum Tower. The plaque facing south is "Drum Tower", and the plaque below is "Shengwen Sida". , the lower plaque is "Harmony Mingsheng"; the north upward plaque is "Shiyong", and the lower plaque is "Chan Yun Juyue".
