The Dunhuang Academy used to be the Dunhuang Art Research Institute, which was later reorganized as the Dunhuang Cultural Relics Research Institute. It was expanded into the Dunhuang Academy in 1984. The Dunhuang Academy is a scientific research unit of Dunhuang studies.
