Leiyin Temple is located at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, 4 kilometers south of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, an important town on the ancient Silk Road, beside Crescent Moon Spring.

From the Jin Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, Leiyin Temple was the place where the great masters of the Western Regions promoted Buddhism and traveled in Xiyun, and it was also the place where eminent monks from the Central Plains traveled westward to seek the Dharma. Zhu Fahu, Faxian, Kumarajiva, Xuanzang and other eminent monks have left indelible traces here. Therefore, this auspicious and peaceful resort had the reputation of "the land of the gods of the good country and the holy land of the Buddha" in the Tang Dynasty.

The whole temple is composed of 1 main hall, 2 accompanying halls, monks' rooms, and guest rooms for benefactors. There are more than 100 halls and pavilions in total. There are 37 statues of Buddha, Bodhisattva, Arhat and disciples. Among them, the main hall is the Daxiong Hall, and in the middle of the hall is a white marble Buddha statue, 1 meter high, which was donated by overseas Chinese in Myanmar; on both sides of the Buddha statue, there are Bodhisattvas, which are lifelike.
