The Dunhuang Museum is located in the south of Dunhuang City. It is a museum that mainly displays the historical relics of Dunhuang, the capital of the Silk Road, and the precious cultural relics in the Mogao Grottoes. The new Dunhuang Museum was opened in 2012. This museum is not very big among national museums, but because it focuses on the display of the Silk Road and Mogao Grottoes culture, it has become a good place to learn about the history of Dunhuang and the art of Mogao Grottoes. Not to be missed by museum lovers.
The appearance of the current museum is very special. It looks like the walls and beacon towers of the Great Wall of the Han Dynasty. Walking into the interior of the museum is like walking into a group of grottoes. The walls and corridors inside are all in the form of ancient grotto corridors, which are very distinctive. There are a total of six exhibition halls in the museum, but the main exhibition is the theme exhibition of Dunhuang Museum - "The City where Huarong Meets". It takes about 1-2 hours to visit.
The exhibition "The City where Huarong Meets" runs through the entire museum building. It is divided into units according to the age. You can visit the past in order layer by layer. There are 13 units in total. Development, the continued development of Dunhuang during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the prosperity of Dunhuang during the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, the rule of Shazhou Uighurs and Xixia over Dunhuang, Dunhuang during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, the development of Dunhuang in the Qing Dynasty, the discovery of the Buddhist scriptures cave, and the anti-grain in the Qing Dynasty Sports, Silk Road ancient coins, etc. These units are mainly distributed according to age, and they have been visited from ancient times to the present along the corridor-like passages of the grottoes to experience the vicissitudes of Dunhuang's millennium history.
The exhibits in the museum are mainly divided into two categories. One is the exhibition of the Mogao Grottoes. There is a replica of the No. 45 Grottoes that were not developed in the Mogao Grottoes. You can see the legendary grottoes that reflect music. style. There are also some Dunhuang slips, that is, the famous slips called "Dunhuang Posthumous Letters", which are very precious. The other category is exhibitions focusing on the culture of the Silk Road. Among them, the Beiliang stone pagodas and portrait bricks are very elegant and beautiful. Among them, the unicorn bricks are rare in the country. They can be regarded as the treasure of this museum. do not miss it.
Here, I systematically learned about the history of Dunhuang and Mogao Grottoes according to the age, and it is also a good preparation for the later travel in Dunhuang. It is worth coming. However, there is no fixed explanation service in the museum. Only a few times you can encounter explanations. Most of the time, you still have to rely on the text descriptions of the exhibits to understand.
