The scenic spot is located in the west of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, east of the Kumtag Desert, with a total area of ​​660,000 hectares, including 198,000 hectares in the core area, 145,750 hectares in the buffer zone, and 316,250 hectares in the experimental area. It is an inland wetland and water system nature reserve, and its main protection objects are wetland system, desert system, precious wild animals and plants and their living environment.


Dunhuang West Lake is a green barrier to prevent the eastward movement of the Kumtag Desert, protect Dunhuang, and protect the Mogao Grottoes. There are feathery deserts, beacon towers of the Han Dynasty that have stood for two thousand years, breathtaking Danqing painted mountains, and sandy valleys where water and sand co-exist. This is a geological museum, a paradise for wild animals in the west.


The West Lake area is relatively low in altitude and is supplied by meltwater from the Qilian Mountains and Altun Mountains, forming a seasonal swamp wetland and river grass wetland.


The West Lake District of Dunhuang is dominated by deserts and Gobi with the atmosphere of the Northwest, dotted with red willows and Populus euphratica, looking like a fire in autumn. Located at the northern foot of the Altun Mountains, at the junction with the edge of the Kumtag Desert, the geological structure in the scenic area is complex, with breathtaking scenery outside the Great Wall and the wonders of the desert.
