The former site of Bethune Field Hospital is located in Tunzhuang, 32.5 kilometers north of Hejian County, Hebei Province. It is the former site of the field hospital established by Dr. Bethune when he participated in the Qihui Campaign during the Anti-Japanese War. At the end of 1938, under the leadership of the division commander, the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army departed from Lanxian County, Luliang District, Western Shanxi Province, and stationed in Huibokou District, Hejian County, Hebei Province. Cooperating with the troops under the Central Jizhong Military Region, they used flexible tactics to attack the Japanese invaders. They smashed the enemy's "siege" three, four, and five times in a row. On April 18, 1939, it was transferred to the Qihui area in the northeast of Hejian County. After three consecutive days and nights of fighting, more than 700 people from the Yoshida Battalion of the 27th Division of the Japanese Army were wiped out. The field hospital located in a small temple in Tunzhuang has only one room in both width and depth. Dr. Bethune continued to work here until the end of the battle. During his stay in Tunzhuang, in addition to rescuing the wounded, he also enthusiastically treated the local people, helped them work, and forged a deep friendship with the people. The small temple is still well preserved.
