Located at the northeast end of the old city of Kashgar, Gaotai Residential Area is a Uygur ethnic settlement built on a high loess cliff with a height of more than 40 meters and a length of more than 800 meters. It has a history of 600 years. It is a display of ancient Uygur residential buildings and folk customs A great landscape.

The area is built on a cliff, and there are nearly 600 households in total. The houses are made of mud and poplar wood, which look loose but are actually very strong. Many houses have a history of hundreds of years.

Looking across the river from the modern Kashgar New City, the old city is obviously higher. Gaoya existed two thousand years ago, and Uighur ancestors built houses here more than one thousand years ago. According to legend, Ban Chao and Geng Gong, famous generals of the Eastern Han Dynasty, once left their footprints here. During the Kashgarhan Dynasty in the middle of the ninth century AD, the palace was built on the north side of this high cliff.

The Uighurs here have lived here for generations, and the houses are built on the cliffs. When the family population increases for a generation, they add a floor to the ancestors' houses. Most of them are earth houses, but there are also many newly built brick houses. Between these randomly built upstairs and outside buildings, there are more than 50 alleys extending in all directions, criss-crossing, winding, and up and down. Without locals to guide the way, outsiders will definitely get lost.

Many old houses and mosques with a history of hundreds of years are preserved here. Gaotai folk houses are praised by Chinese and foreign tourists as "the living folk museum of Uyghurs", which is the connotation of Kashgar, a famous historical and cultural city in China. Gaotai dwellings are not only the best place for Uyghur traditional handicrafts, but also the palace of Uyghur landscaping, sculpture and painting art.

must see tips

The layout of the alleys in the ancient city is like a huge maze. If you are not careful, you will get lost, but you can still distinguish it from the bricks used to lay the ground. Hexagonal bricks represent a road ahead, and square bricks represent a dead end ahead.
