The Southern Great Wall was built in the 33rd year of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty (AD 1554). It is a part of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty. It is roughly located in Fenghuang County, Hunan Province. 190 kilometers. The southern Great Wall was built by the rulers of the Ming Dynasty to isolate the southern minorities, suppress resistance, and stabilize the Miao border. Along the way, there are many sentry towers, forts, checkpoints and gates for stationing troops and defense.
Today, most of the Great Wall in the South has been destroyed, and the relics are scattered on the sparsely populated mountain ridges in western Hunan. The stone blocks along the roads have been continuously removed by the locals to build houses and ridges. Today only intermittent walls can be seen, and some well-preserved castles. In 2001, the government funded the restoration of the 1.78-kilometer Great Wall, and then built the east and west gates and the circular city wall to repair 4.5 kilometers outward. The main tourist in the scenic area is the part restored by the government.
When visiting the Great Wall in the South, it is recommended not to compare it with the Great Wall in the North. Although it is not as majestic as the Great Wall in the North, and its scale is much smaller than the Great Wall in the North, it is still not inferior, and it has unique characteristics of the scenery of the South and the customs of the ethnic minorities in Western Hunan.
