The ancient city was built in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. After Genghis Khan conquered Central Asia, he assigned it to his second son Chagatai for management. In 1292, it became the territory of King Aluhu, the son of Chagatai, called "Yelqin" city.

In the 1770s, after the Erut Mongolian Junggar tribe continued to develop and become stronger in the Ili River Valley, they moved their family to Ili, and the ancient city of Hainuk became the capital of the Junggar Khanate. At the beginning of the 18th century, they plundered a large amount of gold, silver, and Buddha statues from Tibet, and then built the Hainuk Temple on the south bank of the Ili River and the Gulezha Temple on the north bank to enshrine and enshrine them, which became places of worship for the Mongolians at that time. Today, the outer city of the ancient city has been destroyed, and the rectangular city wall of the inner city still remains. The Hainuke Temple in the ancient city, namely the Yinding Temple, is across the river from the Jinding Temple in Yining City. It was built at the same time as the Jinding Temple, so its scale is larger than the latter. Hainuke means "yak" in Mongolian, and it is said that the roof of the temple is named after the decoration of yak horns. The Yinding Temple and the Jinding Temple were destroyed by the war at the same time, and the current ruins can only see broken bricks and tiles.
