Hecang City, commonly known as Dafangpan City, was built in the Western Han Dynasty and is located in the Gobi Desert 60 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang. The north and south are embraced by the Gobi desert several feet higher than the castle, making Hecang City very hidden. It is difficult to discover this Cangcheng without coming to the front. It can be seen that the ancients chose this place to build a military supply warehouse, and it took a lot of painstaking efforts, which were carefully surveyed and designed. There are also several beacons guarding Cangcheng in the Gobi Desert, like the eyes of a castle, watching vigilantly there.
Hecang City has been an important military warehouse for the Great Wall's frontier defense reserves from the Han Dynasty to the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Officers and soldiers guarding Yumen Pass, Yang Pass, the Great Wall, beacon towers, and returning from west to east all took food, clothing, and fodder from this warehouse to ensure their strong combat effectiveness. Therefore, Hecang City is an ancient, large-scale and rare military supplies warehouse that has survived from the frontier defense of the Great Wall in Northwest China in ancient China.
Hecang City is built from south to north with rammed earth, rectangular in shape. It is about 132 meters long from east to west, 17 meters wide from north to south, and 6.7 meters from the top of the ruined wall. There are two walls in the north and south directions in the city, separating it into three warehouses that are equal and side by side. Each library opens a door to the south. Most of the four walls have collapsed, only the north wall is relatively intact. There are small triangular holes on the top and bottom of the wall, up and down, and the intervals are staggered and equal, which may be ventilation facilities. There are two additional walls on the east, west and north sides of the outside.
