Helan Mountain Nature Reserve is located in the northwestern part of Ningxia, on the northern and middle sections of the eastern slope of the Helan Mountains, spanning Yongning County, Xixia District, and Helan County in Yinchuan City, Pingluo County, Dawukou District, and Huinong District in Shizuishan City, starting from Mahuang in the north Ditch, south to Sanguankou, west to the watershed, east to the foot of Yanshan. The geographical coordinates are 105°49'-106°41' east longitude and 38°19'-39°22' north latitude. It is 170 kilometers long from north to south and 20-40 kilometers wide from east to west. The total area of the protected area is 193,535.68 hectares, of which the core area is 86,238.71 hectares, the buffer area is 43,309.99 hectares, and the experimental area is 63,986.98 hectares. The main protection objects of Helan Mountain Nature Reserve are dry mountain natural ecosystems and their biodiversity; precious and rare animal and plant resources and their habitats, especially precious and rare tree species and rare and endangered animals such as red deer, blue sheep and horse musk deer and their habitats land; water conservation forests dominated by Qinghai spruce, and typical natural areas that reflect the vertical distribution of forest vegetation; typical natural landscapes in different natural areas.
