The Gaoligong Handmade Paper Museum is built in the fields beside Xinzhuang Village, Gaoligong Mountain, Tengchong, Yunnan Province. It is a rural public museum invested by the people. The architect designed the building as a building cluster composed of several small volumes, like a miniature village. The whole village and the museum form a larger museum, because every household can show visitors the craft of papermaking, and the museum condenses the spatial experience of the village. The unique design of the museum hopes to bring visitors a constantly changing experience between the internal exhibition and the beautiful rural landscape outside, so as to remind the inseparable relationship between architecture, papermaking and environment.
The exhibition part consists of six exhibition halls of various shapes that surround the central courtyard to form a continuous visiting route. There are also office spaces, tea rooms and guest rooms inside the museum building. In the middle of the courtyard on the first floor is a tea room that is completely open to the courtyard. The second floor is an office space, which is connected to the guest rooms on the third floor and a roof platform with a view of the mountains through an outdoor staircase.
