Jincheng Ancient Town, Kunming is located in Jincheng Town, Jinning County, on the southeast bank of Dianchi Lake. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and a lakeside hilly plain on one side. Jincheng ancient town has a special status in the history of architecture and urban construction. Almost all houses in the ancient town have an ancient water well, which is called "private well" by local people. The well is not dug in the patio of the courtyard house, but is set beside the stove in the kitchen, which is very convenient for drawing water. In contrast to the private wells, there are also some wells scattered on the street outside the house, which are called "official wells", hence the name of the official well street. Without exception, these ancient wells have characteristics different from those in other places. One is that the mouth of the well is small, only about 20 centimeters; the other is that there is a symmetrical small hole on both sides of the well curb. According to the explanation of the local elders, the small well mouth is to prevent someone from throwing themselves into the well to commit suicide, and the small holes on both sides of the well fence are to cover and lock the well to prevent thieves from poisoning!
