The Karamay Oilfield was the first large oilfield discovered in 1955 after the liberation of our country. The exploration and development of the Karamay Oilfield is undertaken by the Xinjiang Oilfield Company, so the Xinjiang Oilfield in the usual sense is the Karamay Oilfield.

The Karamay Oilfield is located on the northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang. The first well drilled by it is about 130 kilometers north of the Dushanzi Oilfield. There is an "asphalt mound" where black oil flows out instead of water like a mountain spring. The locals call it "Black Oil Mountain", which means "Karamay" in Uighur.

The Karamay Oilfield is based on Heiyou Mountain and radiates to the south, north, and east for thousands of miles. The main target of the Karamay Oilfield is the Junggar Basin, where huge oil-generating rock formations are developed, containing 8.6 billion tons of oil resources and 2.1 trillion cubic meters of natural gas resources. The current proven rates are only about 20% and 3.4%, respectively. The development potential is huge. Tourists can see kowtow machines and small oil fields on the roadways on both sides of the road. If you want to see oil extraction, you can go to the Black Oil Mountain Exhibition Hall.
