1. The reason for the construction of the Leshan Giant Buddha
According to legend, at the confluence of the Minjiang River, Qingyi River and Dadu River in ancient Leshan, the water was so fierce that ships passing by here often sank. In order to reduce the water potential and subdue the river, Zen master Haitong summoned manpower and material resources to build the Leshan Giant Buddha. After the construction of the Great Buddha was completed, the water actually calmed down a lot, and passing ships could pass through it safely.
2. The Leshan Giant Buddha closed his eyes and shed tears
In 1962, three years after the natural disaster, there were many hungry scorpions floating on Minshan Mountain. At that time, people thought that the Buddha could not bear to see this human tragedy, so he closed his eyes in pain and wept silently. The scientific explanation is that the Buddha statue's closed eyes were caused by acid rain, or acid precipitation. Acid rain can dissolve the hardened cement on the surface of non-metallic building materials, causing holes and cracks to damage buildings.
3. The real name of Leshan Giant Buddha
"Leshan Giant Buddha" is actually the common name for this giant Buddha located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province. The real official name of this Tang Dynasty Buddha has been a mystery. In fact, according to the investigation of many experts later, the real official name of this stone statue called "Leshan Giant Buddha" should be: the Great Maitreya Stone Statue of Lingyun Temple in Jiazhou.
