About 20 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan City, the Longshan Grottoes in Longshan Mountain were excavated in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and the construction was presided over by Taoist Song Defang. Compared with Buddhist grottoes such as Yungang and Longmen, the scale of Longshan Grottoes is not very large. There are mainly Xuhuang niches, Sanqing niches, Woru niches, Xuanzhen niches, Master niches, Qizhen niches and two other Daoist niches. . There are more than 40 stone statues in these grottoes, including Taoist statues such as the ancestors of the Sanqing Dynasty, and real Taoist statues such as Wang Chongyang, the founder of the Quanzhen School, with very vivid expressions and movements.

When you visit the Longshan Grottoes, you will find that the Taoist grottoes here are different from the Buddhist grottoes. The Taoist grottoes here are simple in style and solemn in technique, and even you will have a rough feeling. For example, the carvings of statues in the caves are simple and clean, very subtle and introverted, unlike the elegant and exquisite costumes of Buddha statues in some Buddhist grottoes. When you are playing, you can also see the inscriptions left by the Yuan Dynasty on the sides and front walls of several caves. These are important materials for studying the development history of Taoism and grotto art in the Yuan Dynasty.

In addition to visiting the grottoes, tourists may wish to enjoy the natural beauty of Longshan Mountain, where there are scenic spots such as Peach Blossom Valley and Haotian Temple.

Many people confuse the Longshan Grottoes in the far suburbs with the Tianlongshan Grottoes, but they are actually two different grottoes. Longshan Grottoes are Taoist grottoes, while Tianlongshan Grottoes are Buddhist grottoes.
