Lop Nur is 780 meters above sea level and covers an area of about 3,000 square kilometers. It is located at the heart of the ancient Silk Road in the east of the Tarim Basin. Due to the reduction of the flow of the Tarim River in the middle and late 20th century, the surrounding desertification was serious and degraded rapidly until it completely dried up in the late 1970s.
Known as the "Earth of the Earth", Lop Nur was born at the end of the Tertiary Period and the beginning of the Quaternary Period, 18 million years ago. As early as the Han Dynasty, Lop Nur was "300 miles wide, and its water pavilions lived in winter and summer without increasing or decreasing." There used to be a large-scale ancient Loulan Kingdom with a large population. It was founded before 176 BC and died in 630 AD, with a history of more than 800 years. Until later, it quietly withdrew from the stage of history, and the misty Lop Nur also turned into a dry salt marsh.
After Lop Nur dried up, the surrounding environment changed drastically. Herbaceous plants all withered, and poplar trees, the guardians of sand protection, died in pieces. The desert moved towards Lop Nur at a rate of 3-5 meters per year, and soon merged with the vast Taklamakan Desert. Since then, Lop Nur has become a place where no grass grows, and has become a veritable "sea of death".
