The world-famous Loulan Ancient City, an important historic site in Xinjiang, is located in the west of Lop Nur, the hub of the Western Regions, and occupies an important position on the ancient Silk Road. According to the records of "Historical Records Biography of Dawan" and "Hanshu Biography of the Western Regions", as early as the 2nd century, Loulan was a famous "city outline country" in the Western Regions.

In 1900, Sven Hedin led a Swedish expedition team to explore Lop Nur, but accidentally discovered the ancient city of Loulan. The existing Loulan site is roughly square in shape, each side of the city wall is roughly 330 meters long, and the urban area is roughly 1.1 square kilometers. There are still dilapidated courtyards and towering pagodas in the city. Many ancient cultural relics have been found in the ancient city of Loulan, including various utensils and coins. The most precious one is the Jin Dynasty manuscript "Warring States Policy".

The Loulan Kingdom has a history of more than 800 years from its founding before 176 BC to its demise in 630 AD. Loulan has always been an important transportation hub from the mainland to the Western Regions. Later, Loulan was rarely seen in historical records, and gradually disappeared mysteriously. The disappearance of the Loulan Kingdom is still a mystery. More than 10 walls around the ancient city of Loulan have collapsed, leaving only intermittent walls standing alone. The panoramic view of the Loulan site is ancient and dignified, and the dilapidated architectural relics in the city are lifeless, which is particularly desolate and tragic.

must see tips

1. The ancient city of Loulan is a non-tourism open area and requires special approval from the cultural relics department. If the route passes through the military control area, it needs to be reported to the military department for approval.

2. If you are not an in-depth history and literature lover, it is not recommended to go to the ancient city of Loulan. Not only is the transportation here inconvenient, the prices are even more expensive, and many procedures need to be completed. The antiquities unearthed in Loulan are collected in various museums, and at the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of Loulan cultural relics were also taken away by foreign inspection groups. The famous "Loulan Female Corpse" is collected in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum.
