Located on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan, Lugu Lake is about 2,685 meters above sea level, with beautiful scenery and simple folk customs, known as the "Pearl of the Plateau". The Mosuo people who live by the lake on the Yunnan side follow the walking marriage system of "no marriage between men and women", so Lugu Lake is also known as "the country of daughters in the East".

Highlights overview

Surrounded by green hills, Lugu Lake has winding and graceful shores. There are 17 beaches and 14 bays along the lake. There are 5 islands, 3 peninsulas and 1 seawall connecting the islands in the lake. Among them, Heiwawu Island, Liwubi Island and Lige Island are three scenic spots with viewing and sightseeing value in the lake, known as the "Three Lugu Islands". From June to August every year, the watery flowers in the lake are in full bloom. The flowers are as white as ice and snow, dotted with stars, and crumbling with the wind. The scenery is very charming, just like a fairyland on earth.

There are many villages along the lake, among which the more prosperous ones that can provide food and accommodation are Daluoshui Village and Lige Village. Daluoshui Village is located on the southwest bank of Lugu Lake. It is the earliest village developed by the Lugu Lake. The shuttle bus to and from Lijiang stops here. Lige Island and Lige Village are located on the northwest shore of the lake and are popular tourist distribution centers in recent years. On the north shore of the lake are Nisai Village, Xiaoluoshui Village and Dazui Village, which are quieter because there are fewer tourists. Further east, you will enter the territory of Sichuan Province. Caohai and the former residence of the princess on the southeast coast of the lake are also worth stopping.

How to play

Surrounding the lake is a good way to feel the charm of Lugu Lake. Whether it is riding a battery car or carpooling around the lake, the lakes and mountains and the pristine Mosuo villages along the way will make you stop frequently. Among them, renting a battery car to go around the lake is a popular way to travel, and the inns where you stay generally provide battery car rental services.

In the bustling Daluoshui Village, there is the Mosuo Folklore Museum, where you can learn about Mosuo culture and folk customs. Daluoshui Village is only 8 kilometers away from Lige Village. There is a viewing platform on the hillside in the north of Lige Village, which is a good place to overlook and take photos of Lige Island. Going forward, there is a cable car to climb the Goddess Gemu Mountain in Nisai Village not far away. The Goddess Gemu Cave on the mountain is said to be very effective in making wishes. The art museum and inn of Yang Erche Namu, a celebrity in Lugu Lake, is at the next stop of Nisai Village: Xiaoluoshui Village. This is also the junction of Yunnan and Sichuan.

Continue to go through Dazui Village, Mukua, and Goddess Bay, and you can go all the way to Caohai, and walk across the walking marriage bridge across Caohai. It is also a good experience to imagine the scene of Mosuo men and women walking marriage . After that, you can return to Daluoshui by boat from near Bowa Bay.
