The Ancient Tomb Museum (now renamed "Luoyang Ancient Art Museum") in Beimang Mountain on the outskirts of Luoyang is a thematic museum of ancient tombs and the first ancient tomb museum in the world. The museum is divided into three major exhibition areas: the tomb area of the past dynasties, the tombs of the Northern Wei emperors and the mural hall. There are dozens of tomb chambers from various periods in ancient my country, all of which were relocated from the original site and displayed in the underground exhibition area according to the tomb form. Tourists can get close contact and understand the internal environment of ancient tombs from multiple perspectives, including tomb chamber architecture, unearthed cultural relics, tomb murals, brick carving art and cultural relics.
burial area
The tomb area of past dynasties is located in the east of the museum. It is divided into two parts: above ground and underground. It is a very distinctive and tourist-attracting part of the ancient tomb museum.
The buildings on the ground are a group of buildings imitating the Han Dynasty. In the building complex, there are exhibition rooms such as "Typical Tomb Models of Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties" and "Group Sculptures of Funeral Ceremony of Han Dynasty Emperors". As for the underground part, 25 representative tombs in Luoyang from the Western Han Dynasty to the Song and Jin Dynasties were relocated and restored. There are a total of hundreds of cultural relics on display, as well as a large number of murals.
All the restored tombs (chambers) in the underground part were relocated as a whole. The bricks and stones in the tombs were numbered in situ by archaeologists and then dismantled, and then restored here one by one according to the original. Each tomb is not far apart and connected by passages. You can walk in the passage and walk in front of the tombs of different ages. These tombs are in various poses and with different architectural styles, reflecting an aspect of ancient Chinese architectural art.
There are also many replicas of unearthed cultural relics in the tomb, such as pottery figurines and living utensils of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and three-colored three-color paintings of the Tang Dynasty. There are also epitaphs of the Western Jin Dynasty, Northern Wei Dynasty, Tang and Song Dynasties in the tomb, as well as colorful murals, such as pictures of fighting ghosts, pictures of women opening doors, pictures of ascending to immortals, etc., which can be called treasures of ancient painting art.
Mausoleum of Northern Wei Emperors
Located to the west of the museum. The exhibition area takes the "Jingling" of Emperor Xuanwu of the Northern Wei Dynasty as the main body, and is composed of the relocation and restoration of the Qinghe Wenwen Wang Yuanxuan and Jiangyang Wang Yuancha's tombs. The seal of Jingling is circular, and the pile of rammed earth is more than 20 meters high. Visitors can go down the corridor to the center of the tomb, where a coffin is parked without any items in it. There is a picture of astronomy painted on the top of the tomb of Yuanxuan. There are more than 300 stars in the picture. This picture is about 400 years earlier than the "Dunhuang Star Map", and it is a precious material for the study of ancient Chinese astronomy.
Mural Gallery
The Mural Gallery exhibits authentic tomb murals from the Western Han Dynasty, Eastern Han Dynasty, Wei Jin Dynasty, Tang Song Dynasty, Jin Yuan Dynasty and other dynasties. These murals have clear images and broad themes, covering astronomy, geography, personnel, and gods. The owners of the mural tombs range from emperors, concubines, high-ranking officials, down to local officials and ordinary people.
The museum is small in size, and it is very convenient to reach various areas on foot. However, it should be noted that this place belongs to the resting place of the ancients after all, so don't make loud noises when visiting.
