The Lushena Buddha is the biggest highlight of the entire Longmen Grottoes. The Fengxian Temple located in the Xishan Grottoes is shaped according to the image of Wu Zetian. The statue was made in the fourth year of Xianheng Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty (672). It is the most popular and well-known Buddha statue in the grottoes.
In Sanskrit, Lushena Buddha means light and universal illumination. The Buddha is 17.14 meters high, with a head 4 meters high and ears 1.9 meters long. The face of the Buddha statue is plump and round, with wavy hairlines on the top of the head. The eyebrows are curved like a crescent moon, with a pair of beautiful eyes attached, staring slightly ahead. High straight nose, small mouth, revealing a peaceful smile. The ears are long and slightly drooping, and the chin is round and slightly protruding. The head is slightly lowered, looking down slightly, like a wise and kind middle-aged woman, which is admirable and fearless.
The back of the Buddha is dazzing, with the horseshoe-shaped light and the orb-shaped head light, highlighting the majesty of the Buddha. The dancing flame patterns on the body and the floating flying sky give the Buddha a sense of ease and leisurely movement. In particular, the three layers of shining headlights make the original small head texture, together with the texture of the long and drooping earlobes, make it more beautiful, quiet, heavy and solemn.
