Mount Heng is located in the south of Hunyuan County, Datong City, and is the northern mountain among the "Five Sacred Mountains". Hengshan Scenic Area includes Tianfengling Scenic Area, Cuiping Peak Scenic Area, Qianfoling Scenic Area, etc. Hengshan is not only beautiful, but also an important birthplace of Taoism. There are many Taoist temples on the mountain. According to legend, Zhang Guolao, one of the "Eight Immortals", practiced Taoism in Hengshan.
When visiting Hengshan, you usually first visit the Xuankong Temple, a thousand-year-old temple hanging on the mountainside under Cuiping Peak, and then go to Tianfengling to visit the Taoist buildings, and climb to the top of Tianfengling for a long-term view. The tour route of Hengshan is roughly as follows: Dazi Bay - Hufengkou - Sheshen Cliff - Fei Grottoes - Hengzong Hall - Tianfengling Peak, and it takes about 3-4 hours to go back and forth after climbing the mountain. It should be noted that due to the uncertain opening time of the top of Tianfengling Mountain, most of the time you can only go to Hengzong Hall. Tourists who want to climb to the top can confirm with the scenic spot in advance.
Entering the Tianfengling ticket office is a section of Panshan Road leading to the Hengshan parking lot (Tingzhiling). Looking up from the parking lot to the east, you can see the vigorous "Heng Zong" character engraved on the cliff of Daziwan. This is also a more distinctive stone carving on Mount Heng, and is regarded as a symbol of Mount Heng.
If time is tight, you can take the cableway from the parking lot to the temple group area, or you can climb up. Go up along the hiking trail to Guolaoling, where there is a nearly 90-degree straight bend, and the mountain wind is very strong, which is called "Hufengkou". There are many ancient pines on Mount Hengshan, and the "hanging root pine" in the mouth of several tigers is special. Its roots are all exposed, and it is located in the mouth of the wind. The sound of the wind and trees are intertwined, like the roar of a tiger. In addition, the cliff on the east side of Guolaoling is also a good place to watch the sunset on Mount Heng.
Continue to go up and come to a wooden archway with "North Pillar of Human Heaven" written on it, which is the gate of Hengshan Temple Group. Entering the square courtyard, you can see the Xuanjing Pavilion, where there are two side-by-side wells called "Bitter Sweet Wells". The well in the north is as sweet as nectar, but the well in the south is extremely bitter, which is very magical. Here you can also see Taoist buildings such as the Temple of the Horse, Baixu Temple, and Jieguan Pavilion, where you can offer incense and pray for blessings.
Climbing up again, you will come to Fei Grottoes full of inscriptions by poets of all ages and Hengzong Hall (Beiyue Temple), the main temple of Mount Heng. The Hengzong Hall is the highlight of the Hengshan Temple Group. It is built between the cliffs on the mountainside and has a large scale. In the main hall, Beiyue the Great is enshrined, and above the throne is the four characters "Hua Chui Chang Jiu" in Kangxi's imperial pen. It is worth mentioning that there are 103 steep steps in front of the mountain gate. The steps are inclined forward at about 30 to 40 degrees, and you have to use your hands and feet to climb up. In front of Hengzong Hall, you can overlook the scenery of Mount Heng, with a good view.
To the west of Hengzong Hall is Huixian Cliff, and Huixian Mansion (Jixian Cave) on the mountainside has many wall carvings, the most striking of which are "Grand View of Heaven and Earth" and "Wall Standing on the Wall". This is also the tallest building in Hengshan, surrounded by Yuhuang Pavilion, Yubei Pavilion, Qinqitai, Tongyuan Valley and other landscapes. From Tongyuan Valley to the top of Tianfengling, the main peak of Hengshan Mountain, you can feel the magnificence of "seeing all the small mountains at a glance". Take photos at the top of the mountain and enjoy the scenery. After rest, you can go down the mountain and return to the parking lot through Chunyang Palace and Jiutian Palace.
