The Kucha Kingdom is one of the ancient Western Region countries, and its residents are good at music, and the Kucha music and dance originated here. The ancient city is located in Pilang Village, about two kilometers west of Kuqa County. During the Han and Tang Dynasties in my country, the central government set up political institutions to manage the Western Regions with Kucha as the political center. In the third year of Emperor Yongyuan of the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 91), Ban Chao took up the post of the Protector of the Western Regions and moved the Protector of the Western Regions to Kucha.
The circumference of the ancient city is nearly 8,000 meters, the north wall is 2,000 meters, the south wall is 1,806 meters, the east wall is 1,646 meters, and the west wall is about 2,200 meters. Except for the east, south and north walls that can still be identified, nothing remains of the west wall. The whole city forms an irregular square, and the city wall is about 2-7 meters high, built of rammed earth, with battlements every 40 meters or so. In 1985, Mr. Huang Wenbi, a famous archaeologist in my country, conducted excavation work in this city. The unearthed cultural relics include stone tools, bone tools and painted pottery pieces, copper pieces, Han five baht coins, Kucha small coins, Kaiyuan Tongbao, etc.
The ancient country of Kucha was a big country in the ancient Western Regions. It was located on the Silk Road at the center of communication between China and the West. As early as the third century AD, Buddhism was spread to Kucha via the Silk Road and spread widely in the Kucha area. Monks and laymen built temples, Activities such as opening caves, making statues, painting, and worshiping Buddha have become very frequent. When Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty traveled westward to India to learn scriptures and passed through Kucha, the Buddhism in Kucha had already had "more than a hundred garan schools and more than 5,000 monks, learning the teachings of Theravada, and there are all sects." Kumarajiva, a famous scripture translator in history, was from Kucha.
The ancient Kucha Kingdom was once known as the "Buddha Capital of the Western Regions" and "The Music Capital of the Western Regions". It is one of the "Four Great Buddhist Grottoes in China".
